Comparing magicJack?

magicJack costs less. Here's what $11.99 buys instead.

We're not going to pretend we're cheaper; magicJack's $43 a year is about $3.58 a month and that's genuinely hard to beat. What we sell is the other stuff: a human on the phone 24/7 when something breaks, monthly billing instead of a prepaid year, free porting, and a number that doesn't live or die by a renewal email.

Where the $8 a month actually goes

When it breaks

A human answers our phone

Read any magicJack review thread and one theme repeats: reaching support is the hard part. We staff 24/7 US-based support you can call, and for a device your grandmother might rely on to reach you, that's not a luxury feature.

How you pay

Monthly, not a prepaid year

magicJack is paid up front, a year or more at a time, and renewals are on you to remember. We bill $11.99 monthly. If we ever stop earning it, you stop paying it that same month; no sunk year, no renewal-email roulette.

Whose number it is

Your number, portable both ways

Porting in is free here. Porting out is free too, because it's your number. A lapsed prepaid account shouldn't be able to cost you the phone number you've had for twenty years, so with us it can't.

Three steps, and we do the annoying one

1

Start before your renewal date

If your magicJack year is almost up, start the port a couple of weeks early so the number never sits on a lapsed account. Not sure when it renews? Call us and we'll help you check.

2

We port your number, free

Keep magicJack active until the port completes and your number stays live throughout. We file all the paperwork with them; you don't have to brave their support queue to leave.

3

Plug in the adapter we send

Router on one side, your phone on the other, dial tone in the middle. Your cordless base with all its handsets plugs in the same way.

What people ask before switching

Isn't magicJack way cheaper?

Yes, and we'll keep saying so: $43 a year is about $3.58 a month against our $11.99. If price is the whole decision, buy magicJack with our blessing. People switch to us after the third support chat that went nowhere, or the renewal that lapsed, or the port that stalled. The $8 difference is the cost of the phone just working, and someone answering when it doesn't.

Can I keep my magicJack number?

Yes. Porting in is free and we handle the paperwork. Keep the magicJack account active until the port completes, and if your renewal date is close, start early; a lapsed prepaid account can put the number at risk.

Do I need to buy a device?

No. The adapter ships as part of the service, plugs into your router, and your existing phones plug into it. Nothing to install on a computer, no software, no dongle.

What about my Canadian number?

Included. No premium-number fee, no separate renewal date to track. Canadian and US numbers are the same price here: part of the $11.99. And the whole service works in Canada, not just the numbers — sign up with a Canadian address, 9-1-1 and all. One caveat: we currently ship adapters to US addresses only, so customers in Canada bring their own standard ATA (we'll recommend one if you call) or use the app.

Is there a contract?

No, and no prepaid year either. $11.99 a month, month to month. If you cancel, your number ports out free to whoever's next, even if that's back to magicJack.

Cheap is a price. Reliable is a feature.

$11.99 a month, billed monthly, with a human on the other end of the support line. Port your number in free and find out what the $8 was for.
